Problems in Primary Education
To strengthen the base of primary education, with Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai, Pawar Charitable Trust, other NGO’s and domain experts, various problems in the education system were identified and confronted.
As far as primary education is concerned, Maharashtra stands ahead of many other states. There are in all 84,000 primary schools with 4.5 lakh primary school teachers. The student-teacher ratio is satisfactory in the state. Still a lot needs to be done in the state for the quality education. States like Kerala, Chandigarh, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh have progressed ahead of Maharashtra.
Credit, Health and Education are the advanced needs of human society. Education is pre-requisite for human development. Supriya Sule believes primary education is a fundamental right of every child.
Drop-out rate needs to be redu-ced from 12.66% at primary level and 29% at higher-primary level.
10,000 schools are in need of proper buildings and developed infrastructure.
Number of D.Ed. colleges, no performance appraisal, corruption in the education system and no self-sufficiency of educational institutes in rural areas are some of the major issues.
Education research institutions like NCERT, Goodearth, report by a social activist Mr. Herambh Kulkarni highlight that basic skills among primary level students in Maharashtra such as grasping level and solving simple mathematical equations are poor.
